Believeme,youhavebeenwaitingforafilmlikethistobeonthePÖFFCompetitionProgrammeforalongtime.AndevenmoresofromRussia.Andwhatatitle.Aslasherakintoanelectricshock,thestraightforwardandboldfacedB-filmaestheticsofwhichcouldwellmakethebignameofthisgenre,QuentionTarantnohimself,greenwithenvy.Thisisa‘hammerstraightontheheadbetweentheeyes’brutalbloodbathinwhich29-year-olddirectorKirillSokolovdoesnotholdbackinanything.Andquiterightlyso,whyshouldhe? Thefilmtakesplacepracticallywithinonedwellingandstartsasanyother‘normal’film.Attherequestofhisgirlfriend,ayoungmanturnsupatthedoorstepofherfatheronenight.Thegirlaskshimtokillherfather,buthermotivesremainunclear.Whathappensnextinthissatiricalcomedy,youwillhavetofindoutatthecinema. Thefilmunrollsintoaspectaclecharacteristicofapropersplatter,somethingsimilartothemidnighthitofthepreviousPÖFF,“Revenge”,wheretheviewersareproverbiallydousedinbucketsofbloodandgoretowhichthereseemstobenoend.Andit’snotdisgusting–it’sbloodyfunny!However,jokesaside,“WhyDon’tYouJustDie”isactuallyalotmorethananticsandescapades.ParallelscanforinstancebedrawntoZvyagintsev’s“Loveless”,albeitinadifferentkey. TheBestFilmAwardfromtheVyborgFilmFestivalmaywellhavecausedmumblesofenvyattheawardceremony,butSokolov–consideredtobethesuccessorofAlekseyBalabanov(Brother)–wastherightmanintherightplace.InthelightofSokolov’sgreatambitions,hewillnotbecomingtoPÖFFforanythinglessthanthemainawardoftheDebutCompetitionProgramme.Whocouldargueagainstit?
