很喜欢,上等极品.TheShapeofThingsAfilmreviewbyChristopherNull-Copyright?2003Filmcritic.comNeilLaBute,you'reacruel,cruelman.AfterthesomewhatsenselessYourFriendsandNeighborsandthebafflinglybadperiodpiecePossession,LaButehasatlastreturnedtohisrootswiththekindofstorythatmadeIntheCompanyofMensuchakickinthenuts.Notthatitseemsthatwayfromthestart.AtfirstitlookslikeLaButeistakingusdowntheusualboy-meets-girlroad,whenapudgyAdam(PaulRudd)encountersEvelyn(RachelWeisz)inamuseum.LaButequicklystartswiththenuance:She'spreparingtodefaceastatueinamuseumbecauseshebelievesit's"falseart."Moretothepoint:She'sgettingreadytospray-paintadickonthethingbecauseofherconcernoveroldworldcensorship,whichforcedtheartisttofashionafigleaftocoverthephallus.Soonthey'reahappy,ifunlikely,couple:Evelyn'sanartyüber-feminist,Adam'sanawkwardandunsureEnglishmajor.We'reintroducedtoanothermismatchedpair,oldfriendsofAdam:PerkyblondeJenny(GretchenMol)andüber-assholePhilip(FrederickWeller),whoaresoontobemarriedinwhatPhilipwantstobeanunderwaterceremony.ItsoonbecomesclearthatAdamandJennyhavelingeringfeelingsforoneanother,thoughAdamcontinuestoprofesshisundyingloveforEvelyn.Beforeyoustopreadinganddismissthisfilmentirely,restassuredthisisn'tsomebadSandraBullockmovie.SomethingwickedisafootintherelationshipbetweenAdamandEvethatgoesbeyondthatfigleaf(yes,theGenesismetaphoriswhollyaproposhere).EvelynisgentlyencouragingchangesinAdam--somegood(losealittleweight,cutyourhair),somelessso(getanosejob).Bythetimewegettothegut-punchofafinale,Adamwillbeachangedman.Tryingnottogiveawaytoomuch,I'llsaythatTheShapeofThingsisviciousbutalsoveryhumorous.It'sabitinglydarkandalotoffun,evenifyouaren'tlookingfordepththisweekend.Butdepthithas,withoutbeingpretentious.Byitsfinale,Shapepresentsarealmoralpredicament.Adamisbeingmanipulated,butifit's(mostly)forthebetter,isthatsowrong?Thishappensallthetimeinrelationships,andnooneeverminds.Evelyn'smotivationsshouldbebesidethepoint,right?Onthesurface,thefilm'sanswerisobvious,butthisisthekindofmoviethatmakesyouwrestlewiththepuzzleasyourevealanotherlayerofpsychosesunderneath.LaButestagesShapemuchliketheplayitisbasedon(writtenbyLaButeaswell),oftenwithonlytwooftheprincipalactorsinagivenscene.Thedialogueisvery"play-like"aswell,slightlyunrealandmeticulouslydeadpan.AndsoLaButeinvitesustoaskwhetherTheShapeofThingsisperformanceart--somethingbeyondameremovie--andthatanswerisanunqualifiedyes.MyonlyrealbeefwithShapeisWeisz,whoIadoreasanactressbutwhotragicallyshedsherBritishaccentforanasalandbadlyforcedAmericansqueak.I'mnotthatimpressedtobelievethattheoff-keyvoiceismeanttobepartoftheshow.Imaginehowmuchmoremenacingshewouldhavesoundedwithherwicked,trueaccent.Weiszhastoomuchscreentimetoputitcompletelyaside,butintheendit'snothardtoletitgo.TheShapeofThingsisafilmaboutinsecurity,appearances,andtheperilsofmodernrelationships.It'sviciousanddisturbingwithoutresortingtoshocktacticslikeRequiemforaDream.It'scleverandmeansatire,butit'salsooneofthosestorieswhereyousay,"Hey,thatcouldhappen."
